Fifa 12 with its focus on a more tactical defending system has made using the through ball a little more tricky.
However there is no getting away from the fact when you execute a perfect through ball it can be absolutely devastating to your opponents ripping there defence in half.
At the same time the new tactical defending has made it (for those of us who want to learn it) better at reading the game and perhaps anticipating your opponents through ball.

How to Attack with Through Balls
Tip #1 – Use Wingers
One of the best ways I have found to use the though ball is to not always just try and use it one one of your strikers. If you have fast wingers then playing a through ball to them really can open up some space most of the time enabling you to either get a cross in, or have your winger make a drive into the box himself.
Tip #2 – Counter Often
Another good way I have found to utilize the through ball is on the counter attack. After your keeper has position of the ball pass it to a open defender. Then if you are fast enough play a couple of through balls in the midfield and one eventually through two defenders to your striker.
This can be tricky to pull off but when you do and actually score from it, it really is cool.
Tip #3 – Make Multipe Runs
When you have the ball in midfield make a few little runs back and forth trying to make a little more space between your opponents centre backs. When this happens play a through ball so your striker can run on to it.
The hard part about this is most times the through ball will go into the box so you have to play it perfectly or it will run too close to the opposing keeper.

Defending against a through ball can be really frustrating especially when the Ai is playing its “tricks” on you.
Tip #4 – Play Attention to Drifting Defenders
There is a little exploit I have found useful however, sometimes when the Ai is on the attack you will notice that your defenders will drift quite far apart from each other.
This 9/10 is an indication that the AI is going to play a through ball, if you take control of one of the defenders quickly enough you can intercept and make a counter attack of your own.
Tip #5 – Bring Out the Keeper

One big tip I want to share (one I really need to learn to use my self) is when the Ai does make a through ball you must not panic, especially when it goes through into the box and try to run back with your last defender and make a sliding tackle that will no doubt lead to a penalty and you possibly losing a man.
Instead try and get your keeper out nice and early as soon as the through ball is played. Its a long shot but your keeper has a better chance in making it than your defender does.
