I had the honor of interviewing Matt Hanson, a FIFA 10 Xbox gamer from Australia who is currently ranked #1 in Australia and #22 in the world for the Ea Sports Champions of Gaming Tournament this week. Matt is a long time subscriber of FIFtips.com, so I asked him to share his Top FIFA 10 tips and strategies.
Matt Hanson’s Top FIFA 10 Tips
1. The most important tip keep off the turbo button unless you alone on the wing or have no defenders between you and the goal.
2. Make sure you pass. I rarely enter the box without 5 or 6 passes beforehand it gets opponents disorientated.
3. On Xbox use LB as often as you can it triggers a close player to sprint forward. Then its usually a simple through ball and goal. Also use LB and the Y button for a lobbed through ball it works a treat when you have two attackers and one defender.
4. Use Chelsea. This is the team i have won most of my games with. dont change to all out attack or defense just leave it how it is.
5. Don’t get frustrated if you get scored against. I see so many people start to slide tackle and get red cards very easy. Keep a cool head.
6. Never quit a game. many times i have been down 2-1 in the 80-90min mark all it takes is 2 goals either 2 in regulation time or 1 in reg and 1 in extra time. Also by not quitting you start to understand how you opponent is playing and you can read passes better.
7. Double tap the Y button to make your keeper stay on his line. this is helpful because a lot of players will blast it from outside the box and the closer the keeper is to the goal the better chance he has of stopping it.
8. When you opponent is entering you half rather than holding the A button just sorta of stick close to him its easy for attackers to do trick moves to get past you so rather than drawing them towards the attacker i find it easier to head back towards the goals and block a hole.
9. Make sure you change your attacking style regularly. eg. if you run down the wing all the way to the goal then your opponent with probably guess you are going to do this again. So make sure you cut in and pass or even pass backwards the forwards again. this way your opponent never knows what to expect.
10. With fifa 10 goals from headers are alot harder but i have found if you use the pass button (A) instead of the shoot button (B) while the ball is in the air coming into the box, you can pick out a teammate and get a quick shot on goal.
Fifa 10 takes a while to get use to im playing the championship of gaming and im currently ranked #22 global and #1 in Australia this week. It seems to attract good opponents so make sure you have played a few against normal xbox live opponents first. I believe its all about being calm and just waiting for the right pass. It will come.
What tips would you add?
Matt’s tips are great, and I use many of the same strategies during my online play. Do these tips work for you? What else would you add to the list?

Thanks for your tips mate, however I use the PS3 format. What really annoys me about online gaming with fifa is its too ranking baised. I have been playing fifa for about 8 years now and one common feature is when online playing a higher ranked player the software handicaps you. For example the lower ranked player will have to have on avaerage 5 shots on target before a goal is scored where as the higher ranked player will have the same opportunities and will score at least 3 times. I have had scenerios against higher ranked players where the likes of Ronaldo or wayne Rooney will miss a tap in, or hit the woodwork all the time. I had an incident where I had an open goal from 2 yards, last minute and it hit the bar. At the end of the match which I lost in extra time, I checked my opponents ranking and it was higher than mine. What is your take on this ?

I really haven’t noticed anything like this. Probably because i don’t look into the ranking to much.
That’s just something that can upset your mindset. If you go into a match thinking someone is better than you then chances are you may not play the same as you would with any other game. I have been in plenty of matches where just by watching my opponent i can tell he has a higher skill level than me. But i just keep attacking time after time after time and by regularly changing the way i attack it throws opponents of guard and allows me to beat them comfortably. i have just started to implement trick moves into my game. But im thinking of taking them back out again because it seems to attract a lot of quitters. 4-0 in 14mins bye bye
I think you misunderstood me, it does not affect my mind set, I dont know their ranking till after the match anyway. However I can assure you if a player has on average 200 more ranking points than you, you probably win one in 10 of those matches. Do a survey and you’ll see, unless your fortunate to be drawn most of the time against players with similar ranking. By the way skill tricks are irrelevant if your opponent is much higher ranked than you. I have played many lower ranked plays with great skill tricks and I hammer them 4-0 and 5-0.
I’m not sure what level you are at but when you get to level 20-30 this ranking biased becauses more obvious, at low ranking the software this not seem to be that fussed about ranking. Most experienced fifa players are aware of the software control ie ranking baised. Have you ever asked yourself why the software allows goals to be score around half time, beginning of second half and near 90 minutes? Yes this happens in real football but in fifa you can almost guarantee it. You may wanna be a bit more observant about the game cos it will make you a much better player and you wont need skill tricks either.
thanks for the tips it really helped me and i have a question i was playing somebody online and we were both using chelsea and i didnt understand why his team players ran faster than mine if we played the same can anyone help me
Basically Brian this is a common occurrence. Most of the time it’s got to do with either your connection of your opponents. It happens to me as well. Just last night i was playing Chelsea V England and i think it was Ashley young who ran from one end of the pitch to the other in about 6 seconds. Not one of my mid’s or def’s had a chance . Lucky i had Mr. petr cech who saved me from going 1-0 down. When this happens to me i make sure i don’t pull any def’s towards the ball. I just run backwards and fill some gaps. hope this helps
The tips are you give are outstanding. I’ve found myself undefeated in 32 games with your tips. I’ll always becoming back for more. Happy Holidays!

p.s. I also use PS3 format and have noticed higher ranking players always get the luckiest goals, and likewise when im playing lower levels. I’m not sure if it’s coincidence or not, but it can be very annoying. Anyone can feel free to add me. Imminent–Fate
Hi mate,
Im glad to see the tips are helping. im currently on an 18-0 streak.
To be honest i haven’t noticed any lucky goals or anything like that.
I mean i have had games where all the bounces eg.loose ball from tackles go to my opponent, and that really grinds my gears. But in the end i still win. Again i think if you don’t look at the ranking then you will be better off in the game.
Matt
Been playing FIFA for a long time now. Online, I understand about the bias people have been discussing here. I had always thought that this happened depending upon which team was ranked higher. When playing random online matches, you wil get put against someone of similar rank. If I used a team with just half a star lower the difference in ability is way too much. I was also find my team plays worse than they normally do. Passes go astray, miss easy opportunities etc. I also find decisions will go against me too easily. On a number of occasions, I have had stone wall penalties not given. You kind of just have to laugh. I want to improve my ranking so now I will choose the same level team as my opponent, even though I like playing with 4 star ir lower. Feels more football realistic to me.
I have always been playing around with formations and strategy settings so it’s good to hear from a high ranked player that they use Chelsea default. I am now only using this formation/strategy and I like it.
As well as not using sprint, I use the close control button, (R1, new, ps3), this keeps the ball close and I feel it gives a more accurate pass too. Nice tip about using pass button for headers in the box.
My tip would be to set up some free kicks, corners to use online. I have a couple that often causes mayhem in the box.
yeh but we need to realy know what is to save
nice tips, thanks matt
it depends on what the keeper is doing
if he charges out then chip shot him if your straight on
otherwise i go slightly to one side (right cus most people are right footed) and i use the finnese shot with RB
some other harder shotting players can just blast it in.
remember dont hold B down too long or it will just be a crap shot
i have a theory that when the game is at the end half time or full time, no matter how had u try u never score, jus think when have u ever scored and the whistle blows rite away on centre
When using the LB to call for a “Player Run” nothing seems to happen. This used to work great in previous versions, but seems to just not work anymore in FIFA 10.
I’m talking about XBox version.
Also See discussion started at EA to see I’m not the only person seeing the problem
